Movie Review: Looper

Looper starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis exceeded my expectations. It isn’t often you go to a movie and have no idea what it’s about. It is even less often that you see a movie that isn’t based off a book, comic, video game, etc. The fact that it’s an original screenplay (as far as I know) gets major bonus points from the start. The great cast and crazy plot made it epic. Spoilers below!!!!

In an age where time travel exists but is illegal, it is used by criminal organizations to bring people in the past to be assassinated by Loopers. Every Looper gets their loop closed eventually when they assassinate themselves. JGL encounters his older self who ends up putting up a fight and insanity ensues.

Throughout the film you’re not really sure who to root for. On the one hand, you want to side with Bruce Willis because he’s from the future, he knows what he’s doing, etc. Then he starts killing random kids and it becomes hard to sympathize. Then we have JGL who is (1) more handsome and (2) more handsome. I immediately want to side with him but he’s so selfish and set in his criminal ways that it makes it hard. In the end he commits a selfless act that hopefully changes the course of history so all in all, go with the more handsome guy from the start.

While I felt like this film was similar in theory to Inception the movies were very different. JGL was in both movies and you are being mind f*cked the whole film but the similarities end there. Also, it isn’t the worst thing in the world being compared to Inception since that movie was awesome as well.

If I haven’t ruined it too much for you, I recommend going to see it. I almost passed and waited for this to come out on DVD but I’m glad I didn’t. JGL picks great scripts and has only been in good movies ever since 10 Things I Hate About You. If he’s in it, I’ll see it.

Did you see Looper? What did you think?
